Summer Programs 2009
College Now @ Hunter College
Summer Science Institute
Spend this summer at Hunter's College Now Arts and Sciences Institute and you will:
- Earn college credit in math or science by taking rigorous classes and labs that you ordinarily wouldn't have the time for during the regular academic year.
- Expand your horizons with non-credit correlating workshop in the subject of your choice.
- Become familiar and comfortable with a college campus: its facilities, staff, and students.
Courses & Schedule
BIOLOGY 100: Principles of Biology I & Lab
4.5 college credits
Explore the chemical basis of life; basic structure and function of pro- and eukaryotic cells; bioenergetics; Mendelian and molecular genetics; development and mechanisms of control of gene expression at all levels; population genetics and evolution.
CHEMISTRY 102/103: General Chemistry I & General Chemistry Laboratory I
4.5 college credits
An in-depth introduction to the fundamental concepts in chemistry, including atomic and molecular structure, chemical bonding, and stoichiometric calculations. Students will also engage in experiments designed to illustrate chemistry's fundamental laws and techniques.
GEOLOGY 105
3 college credits
This course covers the fundamentals of geology, including plate tectonic theory, earthquakes, continental drift, mountain-building, mineral deposits, fossil fuels, erosional processes, agents, hazards. It includes labs on the study of minerals and rocks, as well as, field trips.
MATH 160: Matrix Algebra
3 college credits
Systems of linear equations, matrices, determinants, introduction to vector spaces and linear transformations, and applications.
PHYSICS 110: General Physics & Lab
4.5 college credits
This college-level course provides an introduction to the basic concepts of physics: motion, Newton's laws, gravitation, work and energy, momentum, rotation, equilibrium, harmonic motion, and waves. Labs are designed to let students practice what they've learned in class.
STATISTICS 113: Elementary Probability and Statistics
3.0 college credits
Explore the concepts of discrete probability, descriptive, and inferential statistics, as well as estimation and hypothesis testing for normal and binomial means.
