The 2012 Model City Council convened for the final debate on December 1, 2012 at the Richard Harris Terrace in the Borough Manhattan Community College to vote on the Community Safety Act. Forty-nine College Now students representing 26 public high schools and 9 CUNY College Now campus programs participated in this year’s Model City program. For the past 4 weeks, students prepared for their role on City Council by learning about the realities associated with policy making and the intricacies of representation in a diverse urban setting while working on a real legislative agenda. This year’s student council voted in favor of Community Safety Act.

At this year’s final event, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn addressed the students and encouraged them to pursue their goals of education and politics. Other Council Members in attendance were Ydanis Rodriguez, Chair of the Higher Education Committee and Jumaane Williams, Chair of the Oversight and Investigations Committee.

The Model City Program is open to juniors or seniors enrolled in a NYC public high school with prior (or current) College Now experience. For more information about participating in Model City, contact Yvette Santana-Taveras. For more information about the 2012 Model City Council, including photos, please visit the Edward T.
