Three New Public High Schools On CUNY Campuses
Information for Parents and Students

May 14, 2002

Dear Parents:

We are pleased to inform you that in September 2002, the New York City public schools in collaboration with The City University of New York will open three new schools for which your child is eligible to apply.

The schools, all housed on CUNY campuses, are:

  • High School of American Studies at Lehman College
    Bedford Park Boulevard West
    Bronx, New York 10468

  • Queens High School for the Sciences at York College
    94-20 Guy Brewer Boulevard
    Jamaica, New York 11451

  • High School for Math, Engineering and Science at City College
    138th Street and Convent Avenue
    New York, New York 10031

Each of the new high schools will offer a rigorous three-year high school curriculum with a particular focus. In their senior year, students will have the opportunity to take college courses where they will be able to earn up to a full year of college credit. Students may then opt to continue at these CUNY colleges or to apply to colleges elsewhere where they may be eligible to enter as sophomores.

Students at these high schools will be able to avail themselves of all college facilities. This is a unique opportunity for high school students to participate in a small learning community on a large college campus.

We anticipate that there will be an entering ninth grade class of 125 students per school. The opportunity to apply is being extended to students who performed well on the Admissions Test for the Specialized Science High Schools but will not enter one of the existing specialized high schools. Selection for admission to these new high schools will be on the basis of the score on that exam. Enclosed in this packet you will find an application and flyer announcing information forums for both you and your child.

These schools mark the first expansion of New York City’s specialized high schools in decades. We thank the Governor, the Mayor and the legislative leaders for their support of these kinds of educational collaborations. We believe it is a wonderful opportunity and an exciting partnership worthy of your careful consideration.

For further information about a particular school, please contact either Helen Carmody at 718 935-5821, or Ronnie Solow at 718 935-3475 at the Board of Education.

Sincerely,

Matthew Goldstein
