College Readiness Requirement
With a few exceptions, CUNY will only admit you to its bachelors' degree programs at senior or comprehensive colleges if it believes you are skilled enough to do college-level work. (Associate's degree programs don't have this requirement; they allow students to take remedial classes to get up to speed.)
Are you ready for college work?
While there is no surefire formula for determining college readiness, the University makes its decisions based on scores from a variety of tests.
You can demonstrate readiness in:
Reading by scoring:
- 75 or better on the ELA (English Language Arts) Regents
OR - 480 or better on the critical reading section of the SAT
OR - 20 or better on the English component of the ACT
OR - 20 or better on the reading component of the ACT
Writing by scoring:
- 75 or better on the ELA (English Language Arts) Regents
OR - 480 or better on the critical reading section of the SAT
OR - 20 or better on the English component of the ACT
OR - 20 or better on the reading component of the ACT
Mathematics by scoring:
- 75 or better on the Mathematics Regents
OR - 480 or better on the math section of the SAT
OR - 20 or better on the math component of the ACT
Last Chance: the CUNY ACT
If you don't obtain the minimum score for one or more of the categories above, you will have to take the relevant CUNY Skills Assessment Test. That set of tests, also known as the CUNY ACT, gives you a last chance to prove your college readiness. In most cases, if you don't pass, you'll have to take remedial classes.
