College Readiness Requirement

Exceptions

Generally, students admitted to bachelors' degree programs at CUNY senior or comprehensive colleges must show that they are prepared for college-level work. (Requirements for college readiness do NOT apply to associate's degrees.) There are exceptions, however.

If you fall into one of the following categories, you can be admitted to CUNY even if you don't meet the college readiness requirement.

ESL (English as a Second Language)

  • Must have received at least some high school education abroad in a non-English-speaking environment
  • Must not have been previously enrolled in any accredited U.S. college
  • Must not require ath remediation

SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge)

In other cases, CUNY may grant you "provisional" admission. If admitted this way, you must eventually re-test to show that you have improved enough to meet the requirements. Students admitted provisionally may take part in the following opportunities to build their skills:

Summer Skills Immersion Program

  • Free
  • Offered July and August at all 17 undergraduate campuses
  • Work in reading, writing, math, and English as a Second Language

Prelude to Success

  • Partnership program in which a senior college cooperates with a community college
  • Offered at all senior colleges to students with "minimal" remedial needs
  • Students provisionally admitted to senior colleges are officially registered at community colleges to take needed remedial classes.
  • Students have 1 semester to meet requirements; otherwise, they remain enrolled at the community college.
