Which CUNY for Me?
When you fill out your application for admission to CUNY, you are allowed to express a preference for up to 6 individual colleges. (If applying for the Macaulay Honors College, you must choose only one.) Clearly, this means that you will have to decide which colleges are your top choices.
Not so clear: how do you decide that?
There's no easy answer. It will take a lot of work.
Ask Questions!
Start with yourself.
- Do you have a definite idea of what career you'd like to pursue? (You don't have to, but if you do, it could narrow things considerably.)
- Think about your current classes, including College Now. Are there certain subjects that you really enjoy studying? Do some subjects just seem like a natural fit for your way of thinking and doing things?
- Think beyond your current classes. Is there something you haven't had the opportunity to study in high school but are very curious about?
- Think about how much time you can spend getting your degree.
Ask others.
- Ask teachers or guidance counselors who know you about what course of study they'd advise given your track record and ambitions.
- Talk to current or recent college students about their impressions of school. What do they like or dislike about their majors? About their choice of college? Dig deep to understand what makes them answer the way they do.
- Ask adults who seem happy in their careers about the educational paths they took.
- Ask someone who works in a field that interests you for their educational recommendations.
Research!

Begin by using your computer. You can read mini-profiles of each CUNY college right on our site and link to longer ones. Each college also has its own website.
Visit the campuses. There is truly no substitute for actually going to a campus, experiencing the lay of the land, and meeting students and faculty. Hopefully, College Now has introduced you to at least one CUNY campus.
The Admissions Office at any school will help you arrange your visit. There are also designated Open Houses at most campuses that are specifically for prospective students seeking information. Finally, every November is CUNY Month, with loads of special events to showcase each campus. (Listings of events generally start appearing on CUNY's website in October.)
