Melissa Hernandez

Myself Third Spirit of New York 2002 Scholarship Winner

The High School for Arts and Business
Queensborough Community College

"It is a privilege to recommend Melissa Hernandez for the Myself Third: Spirit of New York Scholarship. As her transcript indicates, she is ranked 13 in her class. What her grade report does not indicate, however, is the large array of extra and co-curricular activities that are so much a part of this young woman's life… She is the historian of our school's chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America and an important member of the yearbook committee… Moreover, because of a desire to help others, she does volunteer work at Our Saviour Roman Catholic Church as well. She will be a tremendous asset to the CUNY community."

Excerpts from Melissa's Essay

Civic Responsibility can be defined as the rules you abide by as a citizen of the United States.… The civic portion of this is also to do things for the good of society and for those around you for the betterment of your community or country.… In school, I am part of the Leadership class, which consists of school government and those students who want to participate in school activities and the organization of these activities to make the school a better place. In this leadership class, we try to spread school spirit to get the other students involved in the activities offered, like the Ski Trip, school dances, and spirit days. Jersey Day is a spirit day that is really popular and you show your favorite team by wearing your favorite team player's number.

I participated as well in this year's Penny Drive where we collected nearly $500 dollars and gave it all to the World Trade Center fund after the 9/11 tragedy. I am also a part of the Arts and Business yearbook where I help put together the 2002 yearbook, which will serve as a reminder of all the wonderful days spent at Arts and Business.… This past year I was a participant in the March of Dimes Walk America, where I did a 10-mile walk and raised nearly $100.00 for the cure and for help in saving tiny premature babies. I also volunteer at Our Saviour Roman Catholic Church where I assist parish leaders in the development of activities and events being held at the Church and in the making of the Church's weekly flyers, which detail important information for the week ahead.…

Civic involvement has greatly influenced me and my future endeavors and goals. For the betterment of my peers and community and in the attempt to make the world a better place, I want to continue with the March of Dimes, debate team, and volunteer work like that at my parish of Our Saviour Roman Catholic Church during college and in the years after college.
