Excerpts from Jillian's Essay

Civic Responsibility is having respect, being honest, and looking out for the welfare of the group. It is to take the problems of the world into your own hands.… I have been working in Rehabilitation Therapy of Staten Island University Hospital for five months now. In my department the staff and patients are like family. We work as a team to get patients back to wellness. The senior citizens like to have conversations with me while they get treated.… I give all the patients, young or old, my time and energy. I try to lift their spirits.

Many of the patients in physical therapy can't wait to get back on their feet again. It was the most amazing thing when I saw a man who had not walked in a year and a half stand. He got up out of his wheel chair, raised his head high and began to walk. I had to hide the tear in my eye. He changed my worldview forever…I realized that always being willing to help a patient and just listening really made a difference.

I have had the opportunity to work for the hospital through my medical technology class…many of us will probably end up in the medical field because of the background information we learned in high school.… My civic involvement has helped me understand life better. … My goal is to make as much of a difference in the lives of people as the staff at the Rehabilitation at Staten Island Hospital.
