Excerpts from Nita's Essay
In today's world, very few individuals have time to help others or even want to take the time out to help. There is so much to do in so little time; people forget to realize that there are individuals out there who need someone's assistance occasionally. Those individuals who volunteer their time in a hospital or a non-profit organization nurture this sense of civic responsibility. However, it is still not enough.
As Carrie Chapman Catt once said, "Service to a just cause rewards the worker with more real happiness and satisfaction than any other venture of life." Helping the community in the form of volunteer work is one of the services justified by this quotation. When I help others, I am overcome by this certain type of feeling. This feeling is not overshadowed by greed or selfishness; it is simply the overwhelming joy of making a difference in someone else's life.
From September to December of the year 2000, I performed a little over 80 hours of community service at the Jackson Heights Branch of the Queensborough Public Library. At first, it felt like a normal job; however, I soon realized that it was much more than that. By the time I completed my hours of service, I had a greater feeling about myself as well as a greater appreciation of helping others.…
This experience allowed me to realize that my skills can be advantageous to others, rather than only me. It showed me a new perspective to life and allowed me to understand how gratifying it feels to help others and to know that I was able to make a difference in someone's life. Ever since that experience, it has been my desire to continue helping others in any way possible.… Whether it be selling chocolates or having bake sales at school to raise money, or helping my peers in any problems they have, I always want to help. When I enter college and further my education, I want to continue in these volunteer activities. I find that this is the best way for me to strengthen my social skills as well as communication skills. The activities that I have been participating in are such a big part of my life now; I feel it completes me as an individual.
