Excerpts from Natacha's Essay
Many believe the only people they should care for are themselves. Concerned only about their safety, too involved in satisfying their own needs, they forget about what it means to be a human, let alone an American. We all vividly remember the horrid events of September 11, 2001. It is also clear in our minds how we all came through for one another. New York City's invisible boundaries dividing neighborhoods were erased. Nobody cared what area of the city you lived in since we all shared the same sentiment. We were all mourning the same loss, the loss of innocent lives. Although it is great to know our people can come together in harsh times, why should we wait till something of that magnitude occurs?
It takes much more to lend a helping hand when times are favorable. We have a lot to learn from our country. Have we noticed the many programs benefiting those who are less fortunate? Have we ever stopped to think about the millions of people we have helped overseas? In a world that equates success with youth, nobody is concerned for those who cared for our country before we were born. I had the chance to give back to the elderly and thank them for handing us a rich country full of opportunities.
To be honest, I don't quite know what values influence others into contributing to this country, but in my case it is my gratitude towards the United States of America. I thank this democracy for taking me in, an immigrant with grand dreams of repaying all it has done for my family and me.
