"Kristal stands out for a number of reasons. Kristal is an excellent writer; she writes with intelligence and pathos and with a certain poignancy. Her comments during class discussion are insightful and thought provoking, often providing the necessary catalyst to fuel a discussion and involve the rest of the class. Kristal takes her studies quite seriously. She is a diligent student and an incredibly responsible young lady. This exceptionally poised and mature young woman is destined to go far in life. In high school, she has managed to balance extensive extracurricular activities with outstanding academic performance – no small feat! Teaching Kristal is a pure delight. She is the ideal English student; she is a lover of literature, with a sharp and agile mind. In addition, Kristal is a kind and caring person, helping out wherever there is a need, despite the constraints of her time. She is a dynamic individual and a tremendous asset."

Excerpts from Kristal's Essay

Altruism comes in all different forms and sizes, and when you are able to place the needs of others above your own needs, it shows a greatness of character on your behalf. I strongly believe that you should give back as much as possible to your community. One day when you're unable to help yourself, you will love and appreciate the help of others. I try to place myself in the position of others less fortunate than me, which then feeds to my desire to give. According to human nature, it's said that we all seek self-interest in everything we do, but whenever I do volunteer work, I think about all the people I've helped and that somewhere I'm probably making a difference in someone's life for the better. I feel a sense of tranquility inside and I just know I'm doing the right thing in life. Throughout my years in high school, I've definitely been very involved in working with various charities. I've enjoyed doing each one, ranging from fundraising walks to reading to sweet, innocent little kids with the Read-to-Me program.

When I started high school in New York after living in Trinidad for thirteen years, I saw all the extra-curricular activities I could do and how I could help in my community. I immediately jumped at the chance. The transformation from living in Trinidad to the United States has made me appreciate every single opportunity that has come my way. This makes me want to open up opportunities in return to those less fortunate than me. I strongly believe that as long as people have the resources or the strength to help someone weaker or less fortunate, they should. It's their civic duty and all it takes is a kind heart to do so!
