Nida Syed

Myself Third Spirit of New York 2003 Scholarship Winner

John Bowne High School
Queensborough Community College

"Nida is an unassuming young lady who is guided by altruistic principles in her quiet way. Nida is sensitive to the emotional needs of others, especially youngsters. This can be seen in the way Nida has volunteered to tutor elementary school children so they could pass their citywide exams. It has also become apparent in the way Nida assisted young girls in developing their stitchery, embroidery and sewing skills to help themselves become self-sufficient. Nida's only motive was to give of herself in her usual quiet way. Nida has participated in walk-a-thons, raising money for both cancer patients and the disabled. She volunteers at a religious center to help provide cultural awareness to the youngsters in her community. At the same time, she has maintained a high average and is an honored member of Arista. Nida Syed should be rewarded for dedicating herself to what she hopes will be a lifetime of service to others."

Excerpts from Nida's Essay

Knowing at the end of the day that you have touched a life and made a difference makes you feel proud. Putting the needs of others first makes one a unique individual. The events of 9/11 underscored and highlighted many unique individuals. We saw so many fine examples of this dedication as people volunteered themselves, their services, and their lives. Everyone does things to benefit himself or herself, but the worthy one is he who benefits others without the intention of getting anything in return.

My goal in life is to provide others with my services as much as possible. One of my prime motivations is to affect the lives of young people. The greatest reward for me is when my students pass their examinations. It feels great when I think that I have touched a life and makes me feel worthy of being in this society.

Being a citizen of the United States, I believe deeply in the value of dedication. The true heroes of the 9/11 tragedy are those who sacrificed their lives to save others. We should be proud of our country and try to follow the examples of those who have dedicated themselves to others. In some way, big or small, everyone can make a difference and help another. We saw what a difference this dedication made when our country was attacked. Together, as one people from many different cultures, we renewed our patriotism and were proud to be called Americans.
