Excerpts from Tamesha's Essay

Values are important to people because that's what keeps them going throughout the day. Freedom and equality for all are fundamental values of America. To be in America means that I am free to do certain things that I couldn't do elsewhere. My feelings for this country and its values have motivated me to get involved in helping my community, school, and fellow citizens.

I am most proud of what I did in Global Kids and as a mentor. In Global Kids, students discuss what's going on around the globe, and how it affects them. This was great for me because things that I thought wouldn't have an impact on others, did, and I was astonished to learn this. In mentoring, I just help people with subjects that they have difficulty in. Being a mentor is so inspiring, because others look at you with the hopes that you can educate them. Knowing that I am their role model for the subject they have a problem with makes me feel great. I mentor in math and living environment, and this makes me feel like I have accomplished something positive and worthwhile. Activities such as Global Kids, track and field, and being a mentor, football manager, college office monitor, and program office monitor have given me a sense of pride in my community. Living in a democratic society has allowed me to take on duties that I wouldn't normally consider.

All of my volunteer and extracurricular experiences have profoundly influenced my life. It makes me feel great about myself knowing that I am doing something beneficial for others. I think that the experiences that I went through, and will be going through later on in life, have helped me, and will help me again to grow. I am becoming a better person. I know that I have made a difference in this country and will continue to make contributions.
