Excerpts from Dominique's Essay
Enlightened by the 9/11 terrorist acts, I have realized that I should become more active in my community. Being an American is who I am and proud to be. Becoming a part of my community is what I feel I should do. Some people may think being an American means having life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. To me, it means being a part of the community, politics, and environment. I've made drastic changes in life that not only have helped me, but have helped others as well. I currently help my fellow community members by mentoring students in my school, singing in group homes, doing volunteer work, joining community organizations, and participating in other volunteer activities.
The events of 9/11 were an open door to reflect on what it means to be an American and how we can live in a free, democratic and safe society. Some people don't realize that making an effort in their community and environment can affect change while helping other people. All of my past experiences have inspired me to become a social worker and start an organization to help less fortunate children in my community. I enjoy seeing a positive change in both young and old alike and watch them in turn begin to help others. Whether I am volunteering my time in an academic environment, a shelter or a group home, I know that just by being there and listening, I am making a difference to many people's lives. Feeling safe within one's own community can take on multiple meanings. For me it means being comfortable in a family setting.
