"Students and faculty have a lot of respect and show a liking toward Jieming. This is truly a well-rounded student who has overcome hardship to achieve. I have been very impressed . . . by her level of ambition, which is rarely seen in most high school students. Impressively, she is able to balance this drive with a warm, friendly and compassionate side."

Excerpts from Jieming's Essay
My first job was when I volunteered at a local day care center. Those children that I worked with really opened my eyes to see that each and every one of them had excellent potential to do something great with their lives. Realizing that also contributed to [me] believing that I can do something great with my life as well.
During my senior year I joined the Chinese Culture Club of my school to raise funds for the recent tsunami tragedy. Our club helped to raise about $400 by holding a few bake sales that were a few days long and a drama show where we had to rehearse for about three days a week for three months. It was a very important accomplishment for us because we had to endure long hours of practice. Shortly after the success of the drama show, we were rewarded with praise from our friends, families, and teachers, and of course we sent the money to a charity involved with the tsunami relief effort.
It is true that I have experienced many hardships, but they were nothing compared to what happened to families and friends of victims in the 9/11 and tsunami tragedies. These events had a very important impact on my life. It has shown me what freedom and family really means.
