"Oumie is an inspiration to others. When I think of Oumie, I am in awe at how much she has accomplished in such little time. In her enthusiastic manner, she engages herself in class discussions and individual and small group projects. She always offers her insightful tutoring to help younger students in the lower grades."

Excerpts from Oumie's Essay
Doing what one loves the most and using that knowledge to help other people is one way someone can give back to his/her community and also help her fellow citizens. I have applied this belief when I volunteered at Columbia Presbyterian as a nurse's aide to assist nurses in stripping patients' beds, giving out water and ice, and getting them amenities they might need. While at the hospital, I've listened carefully to what patients had to say and reacted to them in a positive manner. Most of the patients with whom I've used these skills appreciated having a volunteer to listen to their complaints and compliments about their stay in the hospital. Seeing the smile on a patient's face makes me feel that I have made a change in a patient's life, and this brightens my heart.
