She is a very determined and self-disciplined individual who works extremely hard toward the achievement of her goals. Excerpts from Sofiya's Essay

As I embark on my graduate studies at Hunter School of Social Work this upcoming fall, I hope to work with the immigrants from the former Soviet Union. One of my hopes is to help them adjust not only to the economic conditions in their new homes but also to see American diversity in a positive light. Often, immigrant communities feel they are in competition with other ethnicities when they settle in the United States. It is our responsibility to help them recognize the diversity as an opportunity to work cooperatively and find new solutions to the problems that all new Americans face.

For now, I have been working in several community centers. … I provide educational advisement primarily to utilize my knowledge of the Russian language and to inform people of the wide array of educational opportunities available in the U.S. I have also joined Baruch College?s chapter of Project Sunshine, which allows me to volunteer on a regular basis at The NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. This wonderful program allows me to interact in social and recreational programs with seriously ill children and their parents.
