Excerpts from Saul's Essay

"Help those who most need it" were the words from the manager of the LIC YMCA, the organization that is constantly involved in improving our society. During the first days of the voluntary work, we didn't do much and I was disappointed because I thought I was not helping society at all; however, it didn't take five days for three projects to arrive and left two others in our wait list.

The following Saturday, we were up at 7:00 AM getting prepared for the first project, which was nothing but a car wash. I didn't complain since we all knew that the money raised was for children who most needed it. … The following weeks we were collecting toys for children with cancer, for their Christmas presents. The help we did for those kids were more than thanked by the smiles we received from them. People from the Jamaica and Bayside neighborhoods also smiled at us when they knew we were going to paint over the graffiti on their houses' walls.

Since I started to do community service, I understood how many people need our help and how much power we have to help those who most need us. I won't ever forget about those experiences, nor will I forget about the smiles from those whom we had helped.
