Excerpts from Angelica's Essay

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. For the last couple of years, the American Heart Association has organized various teaching stations to teach heart resuscitation techniques to the general public. Having a deep desire to do my part in educating the public, I have been actively involved as a volunteer, teaching CPR to the general public. I have also been involved with the planning and implementation of the Diabetes Expo. [It] has given me great satisfaction teaching people with diabetes and their families to live a healthy lifestyle as they manage their diabetes.

These experiences have changed my perspective on how I view life. I now understand the hardships that people with little or no resources face; I have seen their struggle as they attempt to manage their disease. I now understand the role that the health care provider take in teaching the community, and it is a role I want to be a part of.
