Excerpts from Anar's Essay
I decided to volunteer at my local senior citizen center. I worked in the kitchen in the mornings, served the elderly their food in the afternoon, cleaned up after them, and made several deliveries in the neighborhood. I felt I was involved in helping my community, but I wanted to do more.
In the summers of 2004 and 2005, I volunteered in St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital. . . . One day I was beginning to doubt my role in helping the community, and then suddenly I heard an old man yelling in a foreign language. The foreign language was familiar to me; it was Russian. The man was asking for water, but the nurse did not understand what he wanted. She changed his bedpan, moved his bed in different positions, and attempted to fix various other things in his room. I began talking to him in Russian and calmed him down. I translated his request for the nurse, and asked her to bring him some water. I sat in the room for a mere 20 minutes, but those 20 minutes had a huge impact on my life.
