Excerpts from Xevion's Essay
Living in a free society means serving. It means that you are given the chance to fulfill your own desires, while taking on the responsibility of helping others. Helping others is a key part of any democracy because of its commitment to many and the power it places in the individual. Our nation is great because every citizen can take pride in the control they have over their lives, and their power to change the lives of others
….There are many values that the people of this country follow that give cause for hope. One is perseverance, the idea that no matter how difficult the problem, our goals as a nation can be reached. The second is the idea that any driven individual can create change. It was this idea, the prospect that I could make an impact on the lives of others that inspired me to participate in the New York City Student Union. My participation …has made me more conscious of issues within our society, while reinforcing the sense of responsibility that I have gained throughout my life. It has allowed me to realize that I am at this stage in my life, not solely because of my own work, but because of the effort and dedication of others.
