Shauna-Kay Clarke

Myself Third Spirit of New York 2007 Scholarship Winner

Bronx Leadership Academy II High School
Hostos Community College

"Shauna was undoubtedly one of the strongest students I had in the class, and one of the strongest students I've had in my career. She has an absolutely admirable work ethic and never seems to subside until she has completed every aspect of the task at hand. While she began my course keeping her opinions to herself, as the year went on, she became more vocal and more involved in sharing her opinion. I believe that Shauna will be profoundly successful in whatever she hopes to achieve, because her combination of work ethic, respect for others, and inquisitiveness is so incredibly unique."

Excerpts from Shauna-Kay's Essay

Many people have helped me in my life and I saw the effect their actions had on others and me. This is one of the reasons why I love to help others because it's something that makes me feel good about myself; being able to help others help themselves is an experience that helps to build character and helps people to live a good life. The passion that I have to help others drove me to participate in community services that in the end showed me a new side of life. The first community service I participated in was at P.O.T.S., [where] I acted as a server, distributing food and drinks to the homeless population. My second community service activity was at an organization called YMPJ, [whose] purpose is to educate the youth and teach them how to participate in activities in their community. The experiences I had are ones that I will always cherish because they taught me a lot about community organizing, which is an important part of community development.
