Myself Third Spirit of New York 2007 Scholarship Winner

John Dewey High School
Kingsborough Community College

"An absolute delight! Olivia is one of those students who can brighten up a room. I have come to know Olivia this year as she volunteers countless hours each week in my office. She never attempts to short cut, she always asks questions if she is unsure of a task, she is always eager to do more than is required, and everything she does is done with grace and with pleasure. Olivia's thoughtfulness and good nature are also exhibited in her volunteer activities. Olivia will make a welcomed addition to any school or organization that she is a part of."

Excerpts from Olivia's Essay

After the tragedy of September 11, I felt the urge to help others around me and I wanted to accomplish something good in my life….That is when I became greatly involved in my community and began participating in the March of Dimes to help premature babies and the Breast Cancer walks to help cancer patients. In my school, I stay a little later to help out some teachers in the resource center and in the offices. I feel good about myself when I help other people. It gives me more self confidence and it motivates me to give a helping hand to the needy. I believe that it is important to dedicate a little of our time to serve the country that has a lot to offer us, and in return we should serve that country from our hearts.
