Excerpts from Evan's Essay

Although we remind ourselves of the glories of retired presidents and applaud legends of the movie industry, the accomplishments of the average hard working citizen are often forgotten. They were teachers, businessmen, and members of the military during civil rights conflicts, economic downturns, and war; they were the ones who paved the way for future generations, and they deserve to be recognized and commended as well. I believe that while teenagers celebrate their youth, they also have a duty to honor their elders for the contributions they made toward shaping our society and bringing our country to where it is today. My experience at St. Nicholas Home has taught me to be mindful and sensitive to not only the elderly, but to all people with whom I interact. A chance to fulfill people's needs, whether through light humor or a new medicine, inspires me to make a contribution to the well-being of mankind.
