Excerpts from Hyun Jin's Essay

As a Korean immigrant, I never believed that I could ever become a part of the American Society. But soon, these disagreeable characteristics of mine were shattered when I met Reverend Choi and through him, God. Under the mentorship of Rev. Choi, I've gained a strong faith in God and acquired new perspectives on life. Rev. Choi took notice of my love for children and teaching …. So I took his word and since then, I've started to walk the path of an educator.

I have worked as a volunteer in many places, as an assistant in Goshen Summer School, an assistant teacher in my church's Saturday Korean School, a participant in the Volunteer Literacy Coaching program, an intern in several public schools and a peer tutor to ten friends of mine. Through the works of volunteering and teacher's aids, I have come to the resolution – this will be my life. I will nourish the minds of young generations with the rich and right education that they deserve …. plant in them confidence and love for education. This is how I was treated by Rev. Choi and many other teachers, and they have indeed changed my life. If I can change one child with my devotion and love, then I am changing and shaping the future of society.
