Naseeba Ramjan

Myself Third Spirit of New York 2007 Scholarship Winner

Queens High School of Teaching
Queens College

"Our current senior class counts among them an elite handful of students who have left a lasting impact on the future of our school; Naseeba Ramjan is one of them. Naseeba is a young woman mature beyond her years with both an impeccable academic record and a legacy of student participation whose fingerprint is found everywhere in our school. Equally impressive is Naseeba's work around her community. She has participated in student leadership conferences away from school, [and] after the tsunami she was a community organizer in the local relief effort. [Naseeba] has the academic skills and inner drive to make any dream a reality. Her work in and out of class and her work in the community is proof of this."

Excerpts from Naseeba's Essay

Participating in student government for the past two years, as well as other extra-curricular and community service-related activities have been incredibly meaningful experiences in my life, because they have all contributed greatly to my personality, and my leadership capabilities. Leading is not easy; we must put aside our personal agendas when we lead, listen to others, observe tolerance, do our best to motivate, and lead by example. Leadership has taught me the importance of education. Knowledge allows us to make informed decisions, one of the vital responsibilities of a leader.

I am grateful for my experiences, because of how much personal growth they have fostered to make me who I am. My experiences have certainly humbled me into becoming more caring and aware of the occurrences in my surroundings. I can no longer sit back and watch, hoping that someone else will come along and take responsibility. I am that someone.
