Excerpts from Marissa's Essay

As a student and American citizen, I have progressively developed camaraderie with others of my community. I was able to foster close affinities through dedication to community service and devotion to the common good. I have realized the importance of community through a time of need. Scarcity of help, struggle and common interest all influence communities to come together. A true community is one team consisting of various people with common goals, and exudes loyalty through time and passion. Living through the long recovery from 9/11, I realize the importance of serving others and how one person can change society. All of my volunteering experiences taught me that I can help build a stronger community through social interaction. I helped my junior high school raise over $1,000 in bake sales for the victims of 9/11. We persisted through hard times and a stronger community flourished.
