Myself Third Spirit of New York 2008 Scholarship Winner

Susan E. Wagner High School
College of Staten Island

"Jessica has volunteered her time in a local grammar school summer program. She assists in the special education classroom four hours a day for six weeks. Jessica has also been a voluntary intern at a local occupational therapy office. She notes that this has been a great means of confirming her desire to work in the growing field of OT. Jessica is eager for the challenges of a rigorous academic environment. She has balanced her volunteerism and her academics, and has her priorities in the right order. Jessica is an extraordinary giving young woman who has prepared herself for both the academic demands and the compassionate nature of her chosen field of study."

Excerpts from Jessica's Essay

Today, as a senior in high school, I can truly look at the reflection in the mirror and say that I have changed from just an individual to a strong leader. Contributing and becoming involved in my community led me to understand that I, an ordinary individual, can help make a difference in the world.

Many wonderful things have occurred throughout the years I volunteered at P.S. 7, but the summer of 2007 proved to be an important and life-changing experience for me. I will forever remember what one little boy said to me after our stroll in the park. He said that, by talking to me, he was able to have more fun and enjoy looking at the sky and picking out "characters" from the clouds. As we walked, he told me that he had never walked and talked with someone who made him feel so comfortable and relaxed…. I never thought that I could change a child's life just by talking to him or her. I thought to myself that being able to work with disabled children is such an amazing experience.
