"I have known Melanie for nearly two years and in that time I have come to know her for the unique individual she is. Perhaps the most remarkable qualities are her infinite optimism and enthusiasm. In spite of all she does in school, Melanie's endless energy and enthusiasm do not allow her to forget what she considers to be her obligations to her community. She is an acolyte at St. Gabriel's Church, where she volunteers three days per week to help the church's senior citizens, act as an usher on Youth Sunday, and attends the Youth Group. Additionally, she spends two days per week assisting an elderly neighbor. One would think that her schedule has reached a breaking point, but Melanie still finds time to tutor children at P.S. 12 in various subjects, ranging from reading to math to art. I have no doubt that once Melanie has achieved her Advanced Regents diploma, she will continue to excel in college and in life."

Excerpts from Melanie's Essay
"America, the land of the brave," which I love so dearly, has given me many opportunities like getting a good education, being able to express my thoughts and feelings, and helping people who are in difficult situations. Having these opportunities has made me look at life from a different perspective and has made me appreciate everything I have. This has encouraged me to help others in my community.
For approximately four years, I have been helping my next-door neighbor, Mrs. Sophia, a senior citizen, who has become like a grandmother to me. I assist Grandma Sophia two days a week by buying her groceries, doing her laundry, changing her light bulbs when needed and doing anything she may need help with. Also, for the last few years I have volunteered at St. Gabriel's Senior Citizen Center, where I clean and help in the kitchen, teach senior citizens computer skills, play games with them and entertain them. Helping others has allowed me to help myself in many ways.
