Excerpts from Lucio's Essay

The events of September 11 will long be remembered as a "wake up call to all Americans." Many of us, believe that just because we live in the United States we have nothing to fear. It is true that the United States is a world leader in foreign affairs and that it has the biggest economy in the world. However, one distinct characteristic that makes America different from any other country in the world is that it is a home to many distinct ethnicities and cultures and more importantly, that the United States is a "land of opportunity."

This has motivated me to help my fellow peers. Outside the classroom, I dedicate my time to the Aviation High School Color Guard Drill Team, where we learn fundamental lessons like respecting one another, honoring each other's accomplishments, maintaining our dignity, and acting as one united team. We represent the students at school and set the example for all to try to follow. Outside of school, I volunteer at the Mexican Embassy putting passports together and notifying the applicants about their documents, and I have also taken classes to become an altar server at my church. These activities have helped me mature in my leadership skills.
