Jagatpreet Singh

Myself Third Spirit of New York 2008 Scholarship Winner

Richmond High School
York College

"Having known Jagatpreet for two years, I am privy to his extraordinary levels of commitment and dedication. I have seen him perform under pressure and he performs admirably. In November, Jagatpreet co-chaired our first blood drive of the school year. It is not coincidental that it was the most successful blood drive in our school's history. This altruistic young man gave up countless hours to organize, plan, recruit and schedule for this event. This past January, Jagatpreet co-chaired our annual Fashion Talent Show, which culminated with 23 acts and sold 500 tickets. He is patient, diligent and dynamic. Jagatpreet is the kind of person I always want to have on my team. He enhances everything he does with a mature personality and a high degree of competence."

Excerpts from Jagatpreet's Essay

Diversity is our strength: the bold, burgundy letters stared down at me from the large, gray banner as I walked past. I took a second to ponder the meaning behind it, but was nonetheless baffled as to why anyone would put such a claim up so distinctively. Today, a bit older and a fragment wiser, I can confidently state that I understand my school motto unreservedly. Diversity, as I am thankful to have learned, has been a blessing I had not anticipated. By living in this multi-ethnic and free, democratic society for about ten years now, I have come to learn that all our distinctive and unique backgrounds are what make such an incredibly vibrant people.

Living here has changed my life completely, and for the better. With countless opportunities, I'm free to make choices to shape my future any way I please. I was inspired by all the assistance I received when I first immigrated here, [and] became involved in attempts to give something back to my community. Giving back to my community has given me a sense of identity, and the realization that I can make a difference. I am certain that I will go on to contribute to my community in any way possible, to improve the place I grew up in, the place I deeply care about and the place I call my home!
