"The first time I met Ms. Wu, I knew I had met someone special. The way she expressed herself and her demeanor were mature beyond her years. I have had many opportunities to work with her since then, and this initial impression was accurate. In addition to her maturity, I learned that she was involved in a number of school and community projects. It was actually through joining ASPIRA, which is a Hispanic Heritage organization, that she began doing community service and finding herself. Ms. Wu has selflessly given up countless hours after school to assist at events. She also takes part in community projects, like the Dear Santa Project. I know this project is particularly touching to her because what makes her feel most fulfilled is seeing others happy. As a result of her intelligence and drive to help others, I think she will be successful in college and [her] future career."

Excerpts from Valeria's Essay
This free and democratic society has allowed me to receive a valuable education and has certainly opened doors to a better future. This is why I am fond of this country, and feel that I have to give something back…. One morning, it was announced that the ASPIRA Club was opening its doors for new members and that, if pupils were interested in getting involved in their community, they were welcomed to join. I didn't hesitate. I specifically got involved in the community service committee and planned various activities. In the Dear Santa Project, random letters that children send are picked and presents are [purchased] for them. In the letter I chose, the children said they were sad because their mother had no job, but that they wished for a collection of books and drawing supplies. I was so touched and spent days looking for a nice set of drawing supplies and a collection of short stories by R.L. Stine. On December 25th, my friend and I surprised them with these presents. The [mother] started crying in disbelief and thanked us. I felt great joy. I was able to give them hope and open their eyes so that they see that in this world, everything is possible.
