Going—or Going Back—to College

Studying for an Associates or Bachelors Degree

It doesn't matter whether you graduated from high school this past spring or 30 springs ago—if you have a high school diploma or GED, you can enroll in a degree program at the City University of New York.

Please see the Choosing CUNY guide on this site to learn about:

  • the difference between types of degrees
  • specific admissions requirements
  • undergraduate programs and more

In addition, you'll want to check out the Admissions section of CUNY's website.

Special Options for Working Adults

Parents who want to go back to school usually have busy work and family lives. Fortunately, each CUNY program listed below offers considerable flexibility in scheduling classes.

  • Weekend Programs
Weekdays jam packed? You can take individual courses—or even earn your entire degree—on the weekend!

For more information, see the Weekend Programs web page.

  • Cooperative Education and Internship Programs
The CUNY website describes this program as

"an excellent way to gain valuable added expertise in your current field, approach a career change, or re-enter the labor force while earning your degree. Participating in these programs, you get solid work experience, references, a resumé, college credit, and sometimes a salary."

The program allows you to alternate full-time work and study or to work part-time and study part-time.

For more information, contact the Admissions Office at any CUNY college.

  • CUNY Baccalaureate Program
(for those who already have at least 15 college credits)

In this program, which leads to a bachelors degree, students enroll in one CUNY college but may take courses at any of CUNY's campuses. Instead of pursuing traditional majors, students design their own curriculum in conjunction with faculty mentors.

A special highlight of the Baccalaureate program: the opportunity to earn credit for life experience, internships, and other nonclassroom work.

For more information, see the CUNY Baccalaureate web page.

  • CUNY Online Baccalaureate
(for those who already have at least 30 college credits)

Finish your degree entirely online—from registering for courses and ordering books to completing assignments and corresponding with faculty.

Students concentrate in Communication and Culture, take classes in a range of subjects, and earn a bachelors degree upon successful completion. The course of study will prepare students for a variety of careers and/or graduate school.

For more information, see the CUNY Online Baccalaureate web page.
