What if I can’t fill in all of the information on the Required Forms right now?
If you cannot complete one or all of the forms at this time, save a copy of the forms to your hard drive or to a USB drive. When you are ready to complete the forms, open a web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox). In the pulldown/dropdown menu (where you find File, Edit, View at the top left of your browser screen), go to FILE > OPEN and select your file with the saved copy of the forms. The forms should now open in the browser. Fill in all information, save a copy back to your hard drive or flash drive, and hit the REGISTER NOW on the first page (the Project Information Form) to register your project. You will need to print out a copy, obtain the necessary signatures, and send to NYCSEF by the application deadline (December 18, 2009 by 5 PM).
There are a lot of forms in the application — which forms must I fill out?
All projects need to complete all forms in the Required Forms packet for online registration, except of the Research Plan, and possibly the Team Information Form. The Research Plan must be written as an essay in response to the outlined requirements, and mailed to NYCSEF with the other application forms. For more about the Team Information Form see above.
My project is a Team Project, should all of us register online?
Each team must identify a TEAM LEADER and assign them as Student #1. If you are Student #1 or the Team Leader, you are in charge of registering the project and your team (Student #2/Student #3) online. The Team Leader (Student #1) will be responsible for all communication regarding the project, including registration, application materials, status updates, any requests for additional documentation, and directions for check-in at the fairs.
If you are not Student #1, you do not need to register online for NYCSEF. However you should verify your information on the Team Information Form, and fill in your individual Approval Form (Form 1B) with the necessary signatures for the completed Application to the NYCSEF 2010 fairs.
What are the Supplemental Forms? Why do I have to fill out the forms recommended by the Quick Guide?
The supplemental forms are generally needed if research involves human subjects, vertebrates, microbes, chemicals or activities that may require safety precautions. NYCSEF follows the national and international recommended rules and guidelines for pre-college research which requires that students who conduct research involving human subjects, vertebrates, microbes, dangerous chemicals or activities disclose their methods and safety protocol. By completing these forms, discussing safety precautions or regulated experimental protocols, you alleviate any concerns regarding student and/or research subject care and safety. Not submitting these forms will jeopardize the review and approval of your project.
The quick guide results are based on your answers to specific questions about the nature of your experiments. Those recommended supplemental forms are required by the NYCSEF Scientific Review Committee to review your project and for approval to present your research at the fairs.
Nothing happens when I push submit on the Required Forms. Am I registered for NYCSEF?
When you are ready to submit your online registration, open a web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox). In the pulldown/dropdown menu (where you find File, Edit, View at the top left of your browser screen), go to FILE > OPEN and select your REQUIRED PROJECT FORM file. When you hit submit this time, you should get a confirmation message of your submission and a reminder of the next steps in the application process.
If your confirmation message does not contain your project information (or you do not get an email confirmation containing your project information), check your REQUIRED PROJECT FORM file – be sure that you entered your first and last name, and that your email address is the same as the one you used to start the registration process.
Deadline for Online Registration is December 15, 2009. Your complete NYCSEF Application is due by December 18, 2009 and should contain:
