How does what you learn about government in the classroom play out in the real world? Find out ”and make a difference in your community” when you participate in the Bronx Civic Scholars Institute at Hostos Community College. You will gain an academic and practical understanding of how local government works while acquiring the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to be a leader. As a Bronx Civic Scholar you will:

• Take a college-credit course in Government
• Work as an intern in a Bronx community-based organization (CBO) that specializes in youth activism
• Get ready for work and college through a workshop that helps you set career goals, prepare for interviews, and get a handle on financial aid, scholarships, essays, and more
• See local government in action by taking trips to various civic sites and attending special events featuring distinguished guest speakers

Eligibility Requirements

• Be a New York City public high school student, entering 12th grade in September 2013
• Have a minimum score of 75 on the English Language Arts Regents exam
• OR 480 on the verbal section of the SAT
• OR 50 on each section of the PSAT.
• (Students who have not taken the ELA may qualify with a GPA of 80 and an excellent attendance record).

Students coming from Hostos Community College partner schools will be given priority, but eligible students from other public schools may attend if space permits.
