Bronx Civic Scholars Institute

When you see government officials in the news, do you ever wonder how the decisions made there affect you, your family and your neighborhood? Would you like to learn more about how you can be involved in local government, community organizations? Then the Bronx Civic Scholars Institute at Hostos Community College is for you. In this summer program, you will develop leadership skills, knowledge and experience while gaining an academic and practical understanding of how local government works. As a Bronx Civic Scholar you will:

  • Take a college-credit course in Government: POL101 American Government
  • Work as an intern in a Bronx community-based organization (CBO) that specializes in youth activism
  • Get ready for work and college through a workshop that helps you set career goals, prepare for interviews, and get a handle on financial aid, scholarships, essays, and more
  • See local government in action by taking trips to various civic sites and attending special events featuring distinguished guest speakers
July 5 – August 10, 2017
Monday through Thursday
9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Three college credits and sixty hours of community service/internship credit upon successful completion.

Metrocards and lunch vouchers provided.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a New York City public high school student, entering 12th grade in September 2017
  • Have a minimum score of 75 on the English Language Arts Regents exam
  • OR 480 on the SAT Evidence Based Reading and Writing score
  • OR 50 on each section of the PSAT.
  • (Students who have not taken the ELA may qualify with a GPA of 80 and an excellent attendance record).

Students coming from Hostos Community College partner schools will be given priority, but eligible students from other public schools may attend if space permits.
